A Super Eisner Nomination!
Celebrating the Superman 2023 Annual's Eisner nom and highlighting this week's titles
WE’RE GOING TO THE EISNERS!
That’s the big headline for this week. Believe me, I’m still in a bit of a state of shock over the whole thing. As I said on The Site We Wish Was Still Called Twitter, this is my first time ever getting nominated for an Eisner Award. The fact that it’s for Superman of all books only makes this that much better.
I want to extend a huge congratulations to all the other creators nominated in this category. Being listed alongside you is an honor in and of itself:
In case you missed it, the Superman 2023 Annual was a double-sized comic we released between the first two Superman arcs in August of 2023. I’m really proud of how it turned out. If you want to give it a read, it’s included in the Superman Vol. 1: Supercorp trade.
I also want to shout-out the people that make this issue possible. There’s a whole host of pencillers and inkers like Mahmud Asrar, Edwin Galmon, Caitlin Yarsky, Max Raynor, and Jack Herbert. There’s colorists Dave McCaig and Alex Guimarães. There’s our series letterer Ariana Maher. There’s our editorial duo of Jillian Grant and Paul Kaminski. And, of course, there’s you, the readers that made this book what it is.
I put a lot of work into this annual. It took a bit to write this one, but I had a clear vision for what I wanted it to be. Lots of work on the white board. It could have been easier to make it a series of standalone stories, but I wanted it to all be connected. To showcase Lois and the Daily Planet. Gotham Central is one of my favorite comics, and I was inspired by that while I worked on this issue. Ever since I wrote it I’ve been dying to get back to that sort of storytelling for the series.
I honestly never thought I’d be nominated for an Eisner. I sometimes felt like a ghost in an industry that I love. So I’m very thankful for this nomination and for the work we’ve been doing on Superman to be recognized. Like I said before…I kind of shell-shocked. I didn’t believe it, at first. So thank you to San Diego Comic-Con, the committee and the judges. It really is an honor just to be nominated.
Voting has already started for the Eisners, so if you’re registered, take a look at all the awesome nominations and vote. There a lot of amazing comics up for nomination this year, and all deserve to be read!
While I have you here, check out this week’s releases:
First up is the latest entry in the “House of Brainiac” event in Superman #14, available in stores TODAY:
HOUSE OF BRAINIAC: PART FOUR
DING, DING, DING...SUPERMAN AND LOBO...FIGHT?! The partnership was shaky at best, but now it's exploded! Lobo has betrayed Superman, and it's on now! Even if they stop punching each other long enough to save the day...it's too late! Brainiac has what he needs...and the Brainiac Queen is ALIVE.
It’s Superman versus Lobo. Let’s hope no planets get caught in the crossfire…Also, this issue’s cover might just be my one of favorites of the whole arc:
And here’s the all-star variants that’ll accompany it this week:
PLUS, the big Wednesday release is the conclusion of Cobra Commander:
THE RISE OF COBRA COMMANDER
To build an army, Cobra Commander makes a deal with a powerful ally that can’t be trusted.
Now that’s its started, can the Cobra Threat ever be stopped?
Here’s the final cover from Andrea and Annalisa, and it’s an absolute stunner:
I’m happy to report that we’re going out with a bang when it comes to variant covers:
As a cool bonus, here’s what the last few issues Chris’ variants look like when put together. Courtesy of Chris’ online posts!
