Wow, I can’t believe it’s September already. And nearly the middle of the month, at that. The summer went by way too fast. Really 2023 has gone by extremely quick. It’s often been a very “best of times, worst of times” kind of year.
That being said, I actually went on vacation for a week this summer. A quick trip to Las Vegas that was really needed. Lots of great food, drinks, shows and a long day at the spa. And no, we didn’t gamble. Mostly I just needed a mind reset. And it worked. I only thought about work 10% of the time I was there, which…if you know me and how much of a workaholic I am, that is a huge win. It gave me some time to think about what was important to me in my life and what I see my future as.
This week I’m working on wrapping up some Superman pieces for next year before I dive back into Batman and Robin scripts for the week. It’s been a blast to work on the new series. Taking Bruce and Damian into some areas we’ve never really been able to see them in. The rest of the month is a bit hectic with scripts due and other future planning coming together. We have a lot of fun stories and plan for both books. And Green Arrow! More art from those titles next week!
I’ve been reading a lot more comics than usual this summer. Some highlights:
Eight Billion Genies. Really fun and thought provoking. Went into directions I didn’t expect. A very poetic comic.
A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance: Read the massive hardcover in one sitting. I had read the first…3 or 4 issues back when #1 was coming out and Image sent out some PDFs. I really loved it but could tell it would read better collected. Time really flies because I had no idea the series was over or that it last 18 issues. Reading it all together was an experience. Had a lot of drama and some epic heartbreaking twists and turns. And the art was awesome and subtly filled with storytelling that helped set the scene and tell the emotions of the characters.
That Texas Blood: Just some good ol’ crime comics. Great writing and art.
Swan Song: Loved the first issue. I need to catch up on #2 and #3.
The Cull: I read the first two issues and really want the next three. I found the characters really compelling and the premise interesting. It’s a great example of a core story that people can relate to, but then thrown into the weird and supernatural.
Klik Klik Boom: Fun story with lots of action. I read the first three issues back to back. Interesting characters and awesome art.
W0RLDTR33: I thought I had missed a few issues, so I power read #1 to #5. Turns out I had only missed #5. Such a great series. Love the mystery and world building.
Stray Bullets. I had read the start of this a few times but never did a full re-read before. I dived in this last week and I’m close to the end of the original series. It’s a masterpiece.
And a quick note: I hope you pre-ordered TRANSFORMERS #1 yesterday as it is an amazing series. I’m a bit biased as I also work on the new Energon Universe, but you should really check out the work that Daniel has done. It’s his trademark action and heart. Terrific work.
This week has the launch of our new ongoing BATMAN AND ROBIN series. We’ve been working on this book for over a year and so it’s awesome to finally be able to share it with you this week. Simone did an amazing job on these pages. It’s a lot of high energy and action. But we made sure to still make it a Father and Son adventure. Here’s what to expect from the first issue’s plot:
Father and son. Bruce and Damian. Batman and Robin. From Batman vs. Robin to Knight Terrors, a lot has happened to the Dynamic Duo, but now they are back together and ready to fight crime in Gotham–just in time for Batman's most monstrous rogues to team up to turn the city into an urban jungle! A new villain watches from the shadows, intent on revenge, with a plot to turn one of Batman's greatest assets against him! Can Damian help his father solve the case before it's too late? A brand-new fun and exciting father-and-son adventure begins, from DC Comics architect Joshua Williamson and superstar artist Simone Di Meo!

But wait, there’s more! I’ve also got the second arc finale for Dark Ride coming out this week, so for any horror, theme park, or horror theme park enthusiasts, this is the comic for you! Here’s what to expect from Dark Ride #8:

And here’s a final reminder that the NAILBITER COMPENDIUM is out in stores now. We’ve got a bunch of messages from people who loved the series giving it a re-read in this form, but then also new readers who are binge reading the whole series now. It’s always exciting to see people discover our serial killer comic filled with dark humor.
