The Return of Super Scary Newsletter
Resurrecting my regular newsletter posts in time for the Summer of Superman Special and general updates!
IT’S BEEN A WHILE!
HELLO! Happy Superman Day!
And since today is Superman Day, I’m spending it working on a Superman comic script. Within the chaos of our modern lives, I’m glad to write someone as hopeful as Superman. I hope you’re out there rocking your Superman t-shirts and celebrating the greatest superhero of all time.
Last year we put the newsletter on hold because I was burned out and needed to find places to cut back. Sadly, this newsletter got caught up in that. BUT now we’re back with a new plan to do one newsletter a month, with some bonus newsletters for big news, or behind the scenes pieces we want to continue like the Flash Files. I’ll talk a bit more about how I changed the way I worked to free myself from the burnout in future newsletters.
A lot has happened in the last year, and it will be great to have a place to talk about them again. It’s been too long. A few projects have ramped up in recent months and I want the space to share them with you in a more direct way.
My only comic books on the stands right now are Superman and G.I. Joe, but I have a few secret projects I’m working on. Some for DC, and some for elsewhere. And a massive project I’ve been working on for the last year that is probably one of the biggest things I’ve done in my career. Very different and I know it will surprise people.
But none of them will be announced for a while. But we will be talking about them in detail in our newsletter.
But for starters let’s talk about SUPERMAN #28. We announced this new storyline this week.
This two page spread from the end of the All In Special was our big finish for that issue that teases the future of the DCU. It teased Darkseid’s Legion. And that story continues in Superman #28.
I’ve been asked “is this Legion is from the future of the DCU or from the Absolute Universe?” And that will be answered in this storyline. You’ll see. As Booster said in the Summer of Superman Special “The future is lost.” Could Booster be talking about TWO futures? Or more? Or just one? That will be revealed soon. There is a pretty big clue as to what is going on hidden within the All In Special, if you think about it.
Dan Mora is drawing these issues and it is looks kick-ass. So beautiful. He’s been killing it on the book since #19 and now with this arc he’s doing bonkers work. Dan’s cover for #29 is going to break some hearts.
You're going to hear a lot about Superman #28 in the coming months. That issue picks up the All In mystery with Booster Gold's disappearance, Darkseid's Legion and its connections to the Absolute Universe. It’s going to be a story that tests Superman’s optimism for the future in new ways. Taking him on a hard journey with some unexpected allies.
The arc starting in #28 is a prelude to a massive story starting for Superman in the fall. You don’t want to miss it as it’s going to be a key piece of the DC’s plans for the year. And if you think this story is wild…wait until you see what happens in #31!
The Summer of Superman has just begun but we have a lot of big plans for Superman this next year.
A bit of box business. It’s come to our attention that a handful of people never got their Nailbiter Fan Club boxes, so we’re done an audit of the boxes and will be sending emails out to people to make sure we have the correct address and get in your hands. Sorry for the mix-up.
Now on with the promo show!

The Summer of Superman continues in SUPERGIRL #1!

The Summer of Superman continues this summer with the launch of writer/artist Sophie Campbell’s Supergirl! It’s an incredibly fun, fresh take on Kara as she returns to her old stomping grounds in Midvale. What’s our hero to do when she discovers a fake Woman of Tomorrow’s been protecting the city in her absence?
Pre-order the debut issue before FOC this Monday to find out!
What else?
Sal and I with ComicPop have been started to record weekly with a focus on more Q&A. Next week we have a video about Superman Day and then about how to pitch comics. So head over there to watch the videos and ask some questions. I find that is sometimes the best way to get answers out of me.
I’ve also got a full slate of DC and Image titles coming your way this month, from G.I. Joe #6 ending arc one and setting up the rest of the series to Superman hitting its milestone 25th issue! Here’s my full April releases in one graphic:
And in crowdfunding news, Life on Paws, a comic written and drawn by fellow creator and friend
, is available to back on Kickstarter! Sina does incredible work, and this is a deeply personal story of his. The campaign has a bunch of fun incentives (including a personalized pet sketch), so make sure to back it ASAP!That’s it for this month. Next month in May will do an update on the current projects and news.
