WELCOME TO THE UNOFFICIAL GREEN ARROW WEEK! Sean's fav Green Arrow comics!
And we go with Green Arrow artist Sean Izaake's favorite GA comics!
WELCOME TO THE UNOFFICIAL GREEN ARROW WEEK! (And a few more days after that…)
GREEN ARROW #1’s Final Order Cut-Off is next weekend on April 2nd. Normally I’d just promote the book the week before the FOC and then the week of release. But this time I thought I’d try something different. I’d start a bit early and offer up way more info and behind the scenes looks at the series than I’d normally do.
Here is the recap post from yesterday that includes all the posts so far:
And as promised last Friday, we now give you…SEAN’S FAV GREEN ARROW COMICS:
SEAN: So Josh pretty much covered all the Green Arrow comics that I wanted to mention. So I’m gonna go with other books that I loved where Ollie shined for me and are some of my favourite appearances by the Green Arrow family.
GREEN ARROW: Injustice vol 1 and 2: literally whenever him and Black Canary showed up he stole the show. His interactions with Harley are a delight and seeing him stand up to Batman and even sock Batman in the kisser was great, especially the art by Bruno Redondo which is inspiring and perfect.
Justice (Issue 10 specifically): this series is fantastic and it would make a great Justice League trilogy of movies if done right. What I love about it is the unusual matchups of heroes vs villains. In this one Ollie goes up against Clayface (with a little help) and Ollie narrates a lot of this issue. And I love how sincere he comes across in this book. It’s very much his issue of the series and he just looks and sounds so awesome. The heart of the League. There’s another few surprises that I loved in it but I’ll let people who haven’t read it as a surprise. The art by Alex Ross and Doug Braithwaite is excellent.
Justice League of America (Issue 200): GA and Black Canary try to stop Batman. Drawn by early Brian Bolland. Nuff said. Beautiful pages and some fun banter between Ollie and Dinah. I think this was my first real exposure to Ollie. So I’ll never forget it.
BLACK CANARY: Birds of Prey - Black Canary/Oracle (Issue 1 one-shot): Man this was so cool. The art and action by Gary Frank was brilliant. This issue really showed what a badass Dinah is. And I loved the growing friendship between her and Barbara.
Birds of Prey: Manhunt: Pretty much every version of that early Birds of Prey series was solid-gold comics and character work. When Dinah and Huntress face off against Shiva it was such an unexpected and hilarious moment that I’ll never forget.
CONNOR HAWKE: JLA (Issue 8): Josh mentioned it in his post but I’ll have to mention this because this is the issue that made me a fan of Connor. Before this I thought he was okay but I wasn’t convinced he was cool 'til he saves the JLA in this issue. Then I was sold and started also collecting his Green Arrow series. I really enjoyed that series. Hard to say more than what Josh said. But Brotherhood of the Fist was a standout for me.
And my absolute fav for last. I could go on for ages about the issues, good and bad, about this guy. But I’ve got to get back to work on issue 3 of GA so I’ll just cut down to a small list.
ARSENAL: The New Teen Titans (Issues 29-30): The first time I was exposed to Roy Harper aka Speedy. He’s back and has to help fight off the Brotherhood of Evil. Such a great two-parter where he shows off his skills and his smart-assness. Also George Perez just drew his costume so freaking cool.
Arsenal mini-series: This series is always my go-to for what a Roy Harper-led series could be. The story of a superhero that’s also trying to juggle being a father and mentor. It’s funny and heartfelt and has some hilarious action. Like Dinah showing Lian how to break Vandal Savage’s finger and Roy using a baby’s pacifier as a weapon. Devin Grayson and Rick Mays shine in this one.
Batman Plus Arsenal one-shot: literally one of my favourite single issue comics of all time. From the opening scene between Nightwing and Arsenal, to Arsenal’s remarks about driving the Batmobile, to calling on all the things he thinks his friends and mentors would do in his situation. The issue is filled with humor and sincerity and the type of levity in the face of disaster that only Roy can deliver. If you haven’t read it, you really REALLY should. If you weren’t a fan of Roy before, you will be after this.
And my favourite non-comic version is Roy from Teen Titans animated. The fun rivalry between Speedy and Robin was great and my favourite episode is where they compete in a tournament against each other. That show is very underrated. Sure it starts out like it’s just for kids but gets pretty dark as the seasons progress.
Anyhoo. Back to the drawing board for me. I’m busy laying out this really cool scene where *redacted* does this thing and they’re *redacted* but at the last second *redacted redacted* goes *redacted*
So I’m sure you’ll get a kick outta that. Cheers Arrow Fam.
That’s it for today. Wednesday we will do a post all about the variant covers!
